What does the initial $250 housing deposit do for me?

This deposit guarantees your housing upon your arrival.
We will not rent your housing out to anyone else. You can be confident that you have a safe place when you arrive in Ocean City.

What if I do not send my $250.00 deposit, will Candy Kitchen have a job and housing for me when I arrive in Ocean City?

It is a possibility that we may have jobs and housing spots available to foreign students.
We do not recommend taking such a risk by just showing up and hoping we will have something available when you arrive. Without your $250.00 deposit, we cannot make any guarantees for housing or employment.

Could you describe the apartments that you offer?

ALL of these locations are one block from the ocean!
Downtown Ocean City 9th Street:

The Acorn North and South - We have (2)-(3) bedroom, (3) bathroom units, each with a living/dining/combined kitchen and an outside deck.
The Cottage - (2) bedroom, (3) bathroom unit with a living/dining/combined kitchen.

North Ocean City/Fenwick - Casa Mia Complex:

Casa Mia House - 2 bedroom 1 bath.
Casa Mia Motel, behind our Fenwick Delaware store - We have an (8)-unit complex on two floors: each apartment has (2) bedrooms, (1) bathroom, one large living/dining/kitchen combination.

What amenities do you offer in the apartments?

Each apartment comes with linens and fully stocked kitchen, cable TV and air conditioning.

Do I have a choice of which apartment I can reserve?

Housing is filled-up by "first come first serve". We also place you in housing depending on which store in which section of town needs employees first. We want your housing to be convenient to your job.

Are there very specific requirements to work at Candy Kitchen?

Each foreign student must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and have average sales skills.
Communication is extremely important when you are working with the public and it is an absolute requirement that you speak and understand English fluently.
It is also VERY IMPORTANT for you to understand American currency. Knowing how to make change is a CRITICAL part of the sales position.
When you arrive in New York, please apply for your Social Security card prior to your departure to Ocean City and have it sent directly to us (see below).

Visit www.ssa.gov for details about applying for the card. You will apply for this card upon arrival in New York.

How quickly must I apply for a Social Security Card?

As soon as you arrive in New York, you should apply for your social security card.
Give them the Candy Kitchens mailing address so the original card can be mailed to us and be here at the latest when you arrive in Ocean City.

What happens if I do not obtain a Social Security Card as soon as possible?

We must use the authorized Social Security Card number to report your wages to the US Government tax agency, Internal Revenue Service.
We will not be able to pay you until the official card is received here in our Human Resources office.
The longer the delay, the tighter your budget will be. Although, if you get into a very tight situation we can offer a loan against your wages when they become payable.

Take the Ocean City bus service to our 53rd Street Bayside offices when you arrive in Ocean City between 9:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday.

How important is it to know and understand the English language for a successful summer at Candy Kitchen?

Customer service and interaction will be primary functions of your experience.
Good communication and comprehension of the English language is a job requirement.

Will I have to count back currency to the customer?

Yes, please understand (US) currency and you must be able to count correct change.
We will train you on the use of the cash register.
